Tips for successful thrifting

  1. Do not walk into a second hand store without a purpose. Are you looking for a sweater? Pants? Dresses? Have at least one target item and stick with it... it's easy to get distracted.
  2. Look for good brands and materials. A gently used Ann Taylor dress will usually hold up much better than a dress from Target in the long term.
  3. Set limits. No matter how great the price, I will not buy used shoes, leggings, swimwear, or undergarments (gross!).
  4. It's okay to buy nothing. Often, thrift stores can be hit-or-miss. One time you go in to find half a dozen great items and the next time you might find nothing. If the store doesn't have your target item, then walk out and try again another day.
  5. What's the fun if you can't splurge sometimes! Even if I don't need one, I always look at dresses. If the price is right, I'll almost always buy.
  6. Visit your favorite thrift stores and consignment shops frequently. The merchandise is always changing.
